Photography works by capturing the light patterns reflected or emitted by the object of the photography and then process and store the image either chemically or electronically. The chemical processing and storage of pictures were related to photo films made of thin plastic sheets coated with a sensitive silver halide chemical and then developed in a “dark room” or a purposely darkened photography laboratory to avoid wrong exposure of the films. The term photography itself literally means “drawing with light” and that is the intention of photography lovers who want to call their output as some form of a creative or artistic endeavour. The so-called digital convergence as predicted by Bill Gates some years ago finally came into fruition with the marriage of personal computers and digital cameras. The advent of digital photography greatly improved the art or profession of photography with a much advanced technology that captures images in very fine detail if done properly.

Digital technology applied to cameras made the camera film obsolete with the final decision of Kodak (reluctantly) to close its film research and development division forever. Digital cameras made picture-taking very easy and hassle-free with the resultant images even look like a professional’s output. The silicon electronic image sensor inside all digital cameras made the camera film unnecessary, cumbersome and time consuming. Surprisingly, there are still a few diehard photographers of the old school who insist on the use of photographic films as the best way to capture images. Family portraits taken in a commercial photography studio are taken with an old-style camera that still uses the old-fashion photographic film. Commercial photography is used in industrial, architectural, aerial, advertising and even medical purpose that requires the pictures to be taken in the best light (pardon the pun).
